Evaluation Question Two : How Does Your Media Represent a Particular Social Group?

My film consists of two main characters (Jack and Sam Taylor), it follows the debate of whether nature (the genetic make-up) determines adulthood characteristics or whether its the nurture of the upbringing that affects the path chosen to be followed. Within my opening, I show the characters at their present status, one who has become a chief inspector and one who has broken the law. By choosing to present the males for my main characters I have played on the typical convention of gender roles that is demonstrated within films. Firstly males are more commonly used to play the role of criminal over females because they hold the masculine trait of being more violent and whilst as women take on a more vulnerable trait. A male is more common to take the senior role of a chief inspector within films because they are stereotypically seen to hold the traits of being more dominant, work orientated and powerful, whilst as females are said to be more obedient, family orientated and fragile therefore are more likely to give into there emotions than a male character. Evidence of these gender roles being demonstrated in horror 'Se7en' where a male is used to play the serial killer and also two males are used to play the detectives. I also conducted research into whether I should make the two characters male or female, I asked 20 participants and 17 replied that it would look more natural to see a male in that role within a film than a female. Therefore I feel my film firstly represents the convention of gender within films but also in society and the traits that the
genders are branded to demonstrate.

My film is also oriented around a lower middle class family, therefore they would be classified under lower 'ABC1s' on the social scale. I tried to demonstrate this social class, through firstly the location I used, I used a lower middle class family home. I also tried to perceive the status through the use of props by using a pre-iced birthday cake and family photographs that demonstrate the children taking part in different events I wanted to show that the family had some disposable money, and that the children did not come from a background where they missed out on "treats". On the surface I therefore wanted to perceive a "perfect" upbringing, one that would maybe be the stereotypical background of someone who would go on to gain a successful position as chief inspector at a relatively young age. However my film also perceives that on the surface it may seem a "perfect" childhood but when focusing cracks begin to show, therefore demonstrating that not everyone from the same social class experiences the same childhood.

Overall however my aim was not focus on a certain social group, if I was focusing on social groups I could of done a film which may focused on two contrasting social classes such as higher and lower, or construct an opening that looks into the social groups that teenagers can be stereotyped into such as chavs, emos, geeks ect. However for my film I wanted to concentrate on psychology and the nature-nurture debate, whilst playing and attracting to my audience I added in the element of a crime, drama.

Evaluation Question One : In What Way Does Your Media Product Use, Develop or Challenge Forms and Conventions Of Real Media Products?

I have decided to answer this question via a slide show, because I wanted to address each section individually and felt I could structure my question more clearly by addressing each aspect on a different slide.
Here is the link to the website where I have uploaded my slide show onto:

My Opening Two Minute : The Final Cut

It has finally come, the final hand in day, I was working up to the minute of 12:10 but I have finally been able to let out a big sigh and say "I have finished my film genetics". I had completed the structure of my film in time for the rough cut viewing last Friday, however when watching I saw I had made a slight spelling mistake (typical me being a perfectionist this could not do), I therefore went back to my title sequence and decided to make a few changes not only to the spelling but also the font. By making the writing a little smaller (the small writing was what I liked about the title sequences within "Se7en") and putting some at the top and bottom I felt overall I have created a better, professional finish.

Our films are going to be premiered on Saturday 24th March at 7pm, they will be shown alongside the year 13 media studies short 5 minute films allowing us to gather audience feedback, however so you can have your own individual viewing of my film, I have uploaded it onto you tube and then onto here for you all the enjoy (don't forget the big bowl of popcorn it is a must have when watching my film)!

My Opening Two Minute Film : Rating My Film...

In order to know what criteria comes under each age categorisation I used researched on the Internet and ended up using the sight bbfc.co.uk (which was very useful), I also did my own research and looked at pre-existing profession films that come under the same genre and specification as my film in order to look at what age rating they are classified under. I looked at other films inspired by psychological issues such as "A beautiful mind" which was rated as a 12 and "A dangerous method" which was rated as a 15. I found my film hard to rate, not because of the content but of the theme is complex and may confuse younger viewers. However when looking at these two exemplar films I think my film would be rated more along the same categorisation as "A beautiful mind" so would receive a rating of a 12

There is a set criteria that the BBFC website states my film should comply to in order to be rated a 12:
+ Horror - "moderate physical and psychological treat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent"
+ Language - "moderate language is allowed"
+ Themes - "mature themes are acceptable but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers"
+ Violence - "moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail"
+ Drugs - "any missus of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised"
+ Sex - "sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young viewers"

My Opening Two Minute : Developing My Rough Cut...

After receiving the feedback from my class mates about my first draft of 'Genetics', I reviewed the comments in order to establish which parts were weaker and needed changing. Overall I was really happy with the feedback I received, initially when developing this idea I was worried that the crosscutting between the old and new footage would confuse the audience and the link of the home-videos being of the adult males when they were younger would not be understood, however my audience did manage to make the connections and what the meaning I was trying to covert to them was established so I was pleased with that. I mostly recieved one the boarder level 4 mark and I hope that with a few of these changes I shall be able to gain a level 4 from my work. The first change that I made which a few had commented on was not being able to hear the dialogue clearly over the music, I therefore decreased the volume of the music and increased the volume of the dialogue (a very quick but I hope effective change). Also when watching my film, I noticed that I had spelt one of the title sequences wrong however I had decided to change my titles as I was not 100% happy with them, so this issue could be easily overcome.

My Opening Two Minute Film : Audience Feedback For Rough Cut...

I have finally been able to have a rough cut of my film which I can show to my other peers and gather some feedback on what improvements I should make, what works and what doesn't and just generally receiving their general opinion about my film. In this rough cut I have quickly imported my title sequence as I was having a slight technical hitch over how to export it from after effects into premier making sure it stays as a transparent background so I could overlay it onto of my footage, I managed to fix this in time to show however was not able to spend lots of time on my sequences therefore I am going to go back to it after showing the rough cuts and develop it.

My class friends, viewed my rough cut on the projector and filled out audience research sheets, where they could not only give me feedback but also an estimated level at the moment and score, here is a table which I have created of the feedback :

My Opening Two Minute Film : Music...

I think that overall this has been one of the most challenging aspects of making my film (I know finding music sounds easy right don't be fooled its not!), the first issue which is one that everyone has had to overcome is the issue of finding not only free music but copyright free music. I also had to overcome the issue with finding the right tone for my opening, I wanted something meaningful which would bring emotion to the audience because of the family aspect but I also did not want to draw away to much from my crime-thriller genre. The music similar to the voice-over which is being narrated at the same time is non-diegetic (this means that the characters cannot hear and therefore do not respond to the sound), I also decided for the reason that the narration will be playing over the music to chose music that is just instrumental rather than containing words (this also meant my search for copy-right free music was a bit easier!). I looked on two websites the first is called 'Soundcloud' however I could not find any track that really stuck out to suiting my opening, I then looked on a site called 'Jamendo' which also allowed my access copy-right free music as long as I state who's music I am using. I chose to use one Autumn Prelude by Zero-project songs. I chose a piano instrumental, firstly not sure whether it would go with my opening I thought I would add it into my sequence to see how it sounded along with my narration (this is one example where trial and error is the best approach) and actually was surprised how well it did go, it especially "adds a level of emotion to the shots of the family photographs" (this was one of the feed back responses I got about my music from my class friends when viewing my rough cut. Overall I am pleased with the Music that I have found, I think it has really helped bring my film together and adds another level to my opening.
