Media Glossary : Shots and Heights...

We have developed our skill of different shots and heights over these last few weeks of media A-level. Firstly having to use them for six still images, to having to use them in our first film to pratice editing to using them for recreating the opening of 'The Hangover'. Since i've started I think I have already learnt alot about the different shots, and I have tried to use them when taking my own personal pictures to develop my skill.

  • Full shot = more than one character in allowed in frame. It is a shot of the whole body there is allowed to be a bit of space above the head and below the feet
  • Medium full = the shot is cut off just above the knees
  • Medium shot = the shot is cut off on the thighs
  • Medium close shot = less is seen of environment in the shot, there is a closer concentration of face
  • Close shot = the prime focus of the shot is the character, there is only a slight gap above the head
  • Wide close up = only the top of shoulders and head are seen in shot
  • Full close up = eyes are the in the top two thirds of frame, the chin is always in the shot, however there is no shoulders
  • Medium close up = more of the top of the head is lost in this shot (this is a cheaper shot due to less lighting needed)
  • Extreme close up = chin and top of head is cut off, the key focus for the shot is the eyes
  • Macro Close up =  when there is an extreme focus on a particular part of body/object (example = a watch)
